description
LMS Duchess Class and Coronation Class (streamlining)

Idol
Designed by Sir William A. Stanier, the first of these locomotives was built in Crewe in 1937. With a pulling force of approx. 18 tons, these 4-cylinder locomotives were very powerful and can be seen as the answer to the LNER A4 Pacifics built by LNER 2 years earlier. Rumors claim that without World War II, the LMS with the Duchess Class of the LNER could have chased the world speed record for steam locomotives. The first locomotives from Crewe were originally built with streamlined cladding. The streamlined linings were left out on locomotives built later. Finally, the streamlining was removed from all locomotives used. Over their life cycle, the locomotives had different paintwork: chestnut brown, blue and later green with a line.
